Many of the Area's Top Players Are Becoming Bigger and Stronger, Though There Still Is Room for the Smaller Players, Too
SIZING IT UP
- DeMatha vs. Good Counsel: The crowd is large and the demand for tickets is even larger when these two schools play.
- DCIAA: Coaches at D.C. public schools learn to cope with small budgets.
- Gaithersburg: For the Trojans, 'Thursday Night Dinner' means piles and piles of food.
- Catoctin: The Cougars enroll 850 students, so a 28-man roster isn't that small.
- C.H. Flowers: The Jaguars have 14 varsity assistant coaches -- and 10 J.V. assistants.
- Southern: As the only Class 2A team in the county, the Bulldogs face a bigger school every week.
- Oakland Mills: Scorpions players have to master a 25-page playbook that includes at least 15 formations.
- La Plata: Late in the 2003 season, the Warriors suited up just 23 players. This summer 138 came out for football.
- Potomac: Postgame field maintenance for the Panthers is handled by 4-foot-1 Mary Faith Stearns.
- South County: Is football a big man's game? Not according to Stallions Coach Pete Bendorf.
- Robinson: Rams fans can find a nearly unlimited selection of team gear near the Oasis concession stand.
- Centreville: Thanks to a giant scoreboard, Wildcats' players have no problem seeing their names up in the lights.
- Handley: The Judges' retooled offensive line aims to prove that bigger is not better.
- Briar Woods: There aren't many seniors on the team, but their contributions will be crucial.
