Athlete of the Year
Alan Webb
South Lakes, Sr.

Nine-time All-Met set national high school mile record with a time of 3 minutes 53.43 seconds at the Prefontaine Classic, breaking Jim Ryun's 36-year-old mark of 3:55.3. Led South Lakes' distance medley and 4x800-meter relay teams to victories at Penn Relays.

Coach of the Year
Valerie Harrington
Patuxent

Helped a Patuxent team devoid of any real stars to its second consecutive SMAC title and a second-place finish at the Maryland 3A South Region Championships. Harrington has helped keep Patuxent at the top since she started the school's program in 1997. Patuxent finished third in Class 3A at the state meet in 1999 and placed second in 2000.

First Team
Garrett Brickner
Lake Braddock, Sr.

Multi-talented jumper cleared 6-9 in the high jump at the Caroline Invitational -- tied for the top mark in the area -- and was sixth in the event at the Penn Relays.

Will Christian
Great Mills, Sr.

Undefeated in SMAC competition this year, the Virginia-bound runner was third at the Penn Relays in the 3,000. Broke the SMAC record in the 3,200 by 14 seconds.

Kyle Farmer
Oakland Mills, Sr.

At Penn Relays, despite pulling his hamstring with 15 yards to go in the 4x100-meter relay, the Florida-bound star led team to a second-place finish and the top U.S. time (41.42).

Versatile star had the area's best 400 time (47.90) heading into the postseason, and is a threat to win the 200, 400 and 800 at any meet he enters. Headed to Tennessee.

Vikas Gowda

Indoor track All-Met has turned in the area's top shot put (61-6) and discus (204-0) throws. Won both events at Maryland 4A West Region Championships.
