SAM BROOKS Colonial Forge, Soph. In her first year competing at the high school level, finished second in the all-around at the Virginia state championships, scoring a 38.525, including a tie for first in the balance beam. The AAA Northwestern Region champion, Brooks led Colonial Forge to a berth in the state team competition for the first time, driving the Eagles to a third-place finish.
Coach of the Year
ELLEN HAGAN-BOWERMAN Lake Braddock The fifth-year coach helped define the Bruins' consistently solid performances, allowing Lake Braddock to reassert itself on the state level after five titles in the 1990s. The Bruins, in their first appearance at states since 2000, took second overall after winning the AAA Patriot District and Northern Region titles.
ALLISON BURKETT | Stone Bridge, Jr. Recorded four scores of 38.0 or better - the most of any gymnast in the area - including a 38.5 and third-place finish at states, after winning the AA Dulles District championship. Burkett also tied for first in the beam. CATIE FRAKES | Stafford, Soph. The consistent AAA Commonwealth District champion improved one full point from last season's score at the state individual championships, finishing fourth in the all-around this year. KAITLIN HOEY | Robinson, Sr. Two-time All Met won the AAA Patriot District individual championship and used a third-place beam performance at states to lift her to a seventh-place finish in the all around. ERIN OSTROVE | Springbrook, Sr. Montgomery County all-around titlist won or tied for first in three events at the Maryland state championships, despite not competing as a club gymnast during her high school career. TARYN SAUNDERS | Chantilly, Soph. Saunders's first-place finish in the all-around, combined with a clutch uneven bars routine at the Northern Region meet, sealed Chantilly's spot in the state championships for the first time in five seasons.
