Gymnast of the Year

Colonial Forge, Jr.

The repeat Gymnast of the Year, she finished tops among area gymnasts at the Virginia state individual championships in the all-around, scoring a 38.675, an improvement of 0.15 of a point from last season. Brooks also led the Eagles to their first AAA Northwestern Region team championship.

Coach of the Year

Oakton/W.T. Woodson/Fairfax

The 21st-year coach has more than 300 career victories, including five state championships, and has won both the Virginia AAA Concorde District and AAA Liberty District titles with Oakton and W.T. Woodson, respectively, for the second straight season. Oakton finished second in the Northern Region and advanced to the state team championships.

First Team
Kelsey Deitz, Stonewall Jackson, Jr.
Deitz vaulted herself into the area’s elite gymnasts with a victory in the all-around at the Virginia AAA Northwestern Region meet, setting a school record with a 38.575. She led the Raiders to their third consecutive top-three finish in the state team championships.

Catie Frakes, Stafford, Jr.
The repeat All-Met is one of the most consistent gymnasts in the area, winning her third straight AAA Commonwealth District championship. She finished seventh in the state in the all-around, including a sixth-place 9.6 in the balance beam.

Danae Johnson, Blake, Soph.
The two-time Maryland state champion in the all-around, Johnson led Blake to two consecutive Montgomery County and state team championships. In the state finals she scored a career-high 37.7.

Taryn Saunders, Chantilly, Jr.
A repeat All-Met, Saunders finished second in the all-around at the Virginia AAA Northern Region meet with a 38.125, highlighted by a 9.9 on balance beam. At the state individual championships, Saunders competed in all four events despite dislocating two toes and suffering a deep leg bruise during the meet.

Jeenie Shank, Lake Braddock, Sr.
The two-time All-Met returned to high school gymnastics after skipping her sophomore and junior seasons and responded by winning the Virginia AAA Northern Region all-around with a 38.775. She guided the Bruins to their second straight Northern Region title and a second-place finish in the state team championship. Will compete for James Madison.
