Wrestler of the Year
Eric Zakrzewski, Herndon, Sr., 171
Claimed second consecutive Virginia AAA championship in perhaps the state's toughest weight class. A three-time Concorde District and Northern Region champion, Zakrzewski improved his career record to 134-29 after holding off Great Bridge's Mike Belew in the state final. Completed the season 39-2 and was undefeated against area opponents. A technician at wrestling on top, Zakrzewski-who also starts in goal for the soccer team-won 24 matches by pin this season



Coach of the Year
Alex Leiderman, Bullis
Led Bulldogs to fifth IAC title and 17-0 record in the last of his 10 seasons at the helm of the Potomac private school. Bullis wrestlers claimed six IAC titles this season. The Bulldogs placed fifth at St. Albans Invitational and 17th at the National Prep Championships-third among area teams. A former Soviet Union national team coach, Leiderman was 140-26 at Bullis.



First Team
103 Mark Tsikerdonas, Frederick, Fr.
Area's top-ranked 103-pounder completed season 25-0 after earning a Maryland 4A/3A title with an overtime win. Placed first at Frederick County and 4A/3A West tournaments.

112 Mike Rowe, DeMatha, Soph.
Two-time National Prep champion went 58-2, not losing after placing fourth in the Beast of the East Tournament in December. Won WCAC, Maryland Catholic championships.

119 Cam Watkins, DeMatha, Soph.
Repeat All-Met completed season with a 49-7 record after placing second at National Prep Championships. Boasts a 97-11 career mark.

119 Brandon Shapiro, Churchill, Sr.
Two-time All-Met claimed second consecutive Maryland 4A/3A title. Went 34-0, completing career with a 102-9 mark. Also placed first at Big M and Sidwell tournaments.

125 Danny April, Churchill, Jr.
Three-time All-Met became 24th wrestler to win three Maryland state titles. Completed season 35-1 and boasts a 104-2 career mark.

130 Ed Asbill, Walkersville, Sr.
Rolled through season, claiming Frederick County, 2A/1A West and 2A/1A state titles. Completed season 35-0, placing first at Hub Cup and Damascus tournaments.

130 Derek McDermott, McDonough, Sr.
Two-time Southern Maryland Athletic Conference champion earned first 4A/3A South Region and 4A/3A state titles. Finished season 37-0, giving him a 134-15 career mark.

135 Samuel Alvarenga, Edison, Sr.
Virginia AAA runner-up claimed first Northern Region title and finished 40-1. Four-time National District champion finished high school career with a 117-23 mark.

135 Rudy Rueda, DeMatha, Jr.
Three-time All-Met returned from a midseason back injury to earn third National Prep championship. Also won third consecutive St. Albans and WCAC titles, finished 42-1.

135 Sonny Nucci, Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Jr.
Went 33-1 and claimed Barons' first state title in 11 years after transferring from Northern. Won Montgomery County and 2A/1A West titles. Career record: 81-27.

145 Eli Black, Chopticon, Jr.
After placing in the top three at states each of the past two seasons, the two-time SMAC champion earned first state title and completed season 37-0. Career record: 104-7.

145 Mark Nakasone, Centennial, Sr.
Finished 38-0, winning first Maryland 2A/1A title. Howard County and 2A/1A South champion also placed first at McDonough, Arundel and Franklin tournaments.

152 Scott Fisher, Colonial Forge, Sr.
Won Stafford school's first state title, going 37-6 against a challenging schedule. Did not lose to an area opponent this year. Career record: 146-41.

152 Dave Nakasone, Centennial, Sr.
Repeat All-Met claimed second 2A/1A title. Finished season 35-0, making him 65-3 over past two seasons, and is a two-time Arundel Tournament and 2A/1A South Region champion.

160 Chris Goings, Westfield, Sr.
Virginia AAA runner-up and Northern Region champion finished season 48-1. Is a two-time Concorde District, Bishop Ireton Tournament and Virginia Beach Classic champion.

160 Dan Scanlan, Loudoun County, Soph.
Claimed first Virginia AA championship after making leap from 130-pound weight class last season. Completed season 16-1 after returning in January from a back injury. Career record: 45-3.

160 Scott Church, Richard Montgomery, Sr.
Claimed second consecutive Maryland 4A/3A West title en route to first state crown. Placed third at 152 pounds last year. Went 75-3 over the past two seasons.

171 Greg Cohen, Damascus, Sr.
Maryland 4A/3A champion completed season 35-1. Won Montgomery County and 4A/3A West titles, pinned the most wrestlers in shortest amount of time at the Big M Tournament.

189 Gary Stewart, DeMatha, Jr.
Fourth-place National Prep Championships finish highlighted a 52-3 season, undefeated against area opponents. Won WCAC and St. Albans Tournament championships.

215 Adam Fassnacht, Robinson, Sr.
Three-sport All-Met has now won a state title in all three pursuits-wrestling (2003), football (2001) and lacrosse (2002). Went 41-4 on the mat, finishing career 104-17.

215 Chad Nkang, Northwestern, Sr.
Earned first Maryland 4A/3A title in dramatic fashion, pinning his opponent in just 38 seconds in the final. Completed season 28-1, was 59-2 over the past two years.

215 Charles Jenkins, Fauquier, Sr.
Two-time state runner-up won first AA state title to cap 20-1 season. Last three years: 105-6.

Hvy. Randy Robinson, Lackey, Sr.
After missing last season with an injury and losing first match of the year, Robinson reeled off 31 consecutive victories to claim first state title. Will play football for Kent State.

Hvy. Bode Ogunwole, Georgetown Prep, Sr.
Repeat All-Met has been the area's premier heavyweight the past two seasons, going 98-0 and winning two National Prep championships. Also an All-Met in football. Will wrestle for Harvard.
