Joe DiMaggio (pictured), whose 56-game hitting streak in 1941 made him an instant American folk hero, died March 8 in Hollywood, Fla. DiMaggio retired from the Yankees in 1951, but his name will be celebrated in song and story for decades.

Family, friends and fans of all-time rushing leader Walter Payton (pictured) gathered at Soldier Field in Chicago on Nov. 6 to say goodbye to the former NFL star. Payton, 45, died of cancer Nov. 1.

Hurricanes Hurricanes' defenseman Steve Chiasson was killed May 3 in Raleigh when his pickup overturned while he was returning home from the team's playoff loss in Boston. He was 32.

Ripkens, Town Say Goodbye to Cal Sr.
His family and friends remembered Cal Ripken Sr. (pictured) as a devoted father and tireless baseball man at burial services March 30. Ripken Sr. died of cancer March 25. He was 63.

Comets' Guard Perrot Dies of Cancer
Hurricanes Kim Perrot, the popular Houston Comets point guard often described as the heart and soul of the two-time WNBA champions, died Aug. 19 of lung cancer. She was 32. Last year, Perrot averaged 8.5 points and 4.7 assists with 84 steals in 30 regular-season games and was second in voting for WNBA defensive player of the year.


G. Moore Killed in CART Crash
Greg Moore was Oct. 31 in the season-ending CART race at California Speedway when he lost control of his car and crashed into a wall. He was 24.
