Location: Taipei is the capital city of Taiwan, islands in eastern Asia, bordering the east China Sea, Philippine Sea, south China Sea and Taiwan Strait, north of the Philippines, off the southeastern coast of China
Population: 21.5 million (1995 estimate)
Comparative area: Slightly larger than Maryland and Delaware combined
Religions: Mixture of Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist 93 percent, Christian 4.5 percent, other 2.5 percent
Landscape: Thickly forested mountains run from north to south and cover about half of Taiwan; at many places along the eastern coast, the mountains drop sharply to the sea; in the west, they slope to gently rolling hills and level land
