Bergoust, Stone Warm Up for Nagano With Wins

WHISTLER, British Columbia — Americans Eric Bergoust and Nikki Stone warmed up for the Olympics by landing tricky jumps in heavy snow Sunday to win World Cup aerials meets.

Bergoust, silver medalist in aerials at the 1997 World Championships, routed the rest of the field with a pair of quad twisting triples. He received 235.85 points to 208.03 for Canadian Nicolas Fontaine, the current world champion.

"It looks like I'm peaking at the right time,'' Bergoust said. "My plan was to jump better earlier in the season and keep it going but everything is going right now.''

Stone, who won the 1995 World Cup title and gold at the world championships, earned her fourth victory in six meets this season. She received 189.82 points on the final day of the Owens Corning World Freestyle with Jacqui Cooper of Australia second at 184.58.

"This is my highest score,'' said Stone, who won twice last month during snowstorms in Europe. "It seems like the more everything is messy, the better I've been jumping.''
