Italy 5, Austria 2 Associated Press Tuesday, February 10, 1998; 7:33 a.m. EST NAGANO, Japan Stefan Figliuzzi scored twice in the first 12:41, bouncing one goal in from behind Austria's net, as Italy picked up a 5-2 victory today, its first in this year's Winter Olympics. Italy finished the preliminary round with a 1-0-2 record and will face France on Thursday for 11th place. Austria finished 0-2-1 and will play Japan on Thursday to decide last place. Figliuzzi put Italy ahead at 5:18 of the first period. With the teams skating 4-on-4, the Canadian-born forward took the puck behind the net and sent a pass out front that bounced off the leg of Austrian defenseman Gerhard Unterluggauer and past goaltender Claus Dalpiaz. He added a second by driving a loose puck from the top of the left face-off circle for an unassisted goal. He just missed a third 6 1-2 minutes into the third by skating through the Austrian defense and putting a wrist shot off the right post. Italy outshot the Austrians 29-13 through the first two periods. But the Austrians hurt themselves, especially in the first period when they gave back a man advantage three times within 45 seconds of going on the power play by taking a penalty of their own.
