Washington Area Biking Links

The Annapolis Bicycle Club: This non-profit, membership club conducts rides throughout the Anne Arundel County, Eastern Shore and Baltimore areas on weekdays, and weekend trips to the Shenadoah Valley, Gettysburg and Western Maryland on weekends. Average ride speeds are 13 to 15 miles per hour, and distances vary from 30 to 50 miles.

Baltimore Bicycling Club: This membership club offers its 3,000 members over 300 day rides annually. Bicyclist groups range in skill level from casual and family groups to racing caliber and all-terrain biking groups. Weekend rides are held April through November, and Tuesday through Thursday rides are held May through October.

The Capybara Mountain Bike Club: Named after a tailless, South American rodent, this Central Maryland membership mountain biking club holds rides year-round on weekends and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights in the spring, summer and fall. In addition to rides, Capybara also holds trail construction and preservation sessions and bike repair and maintenance clinics.

College Park Area Bicycle Coalition: An affiliate of the League of American Bicyclists, this member-based organization primarily serves the Prince George's county area. While no information is given on rides, the club's goals are "to educate people about the joys of bicycling, to inform cyclists about matters of bicycling safety, to raise issues at local, county, and state levels regarding all facets of bicycling, to promote the construction of a network of trails, and to encourage people to bicycle."

Frederick Pedalers Bicycle Club: This membership club offers 15- to 100-mile group rides in the Frederick county area every weekend in the spring, summer and fall. In addition, midweek rides are held in the summer.

The Mid Atlantic Offroad Enthusiasts: This membership club claims to be "the Washington Area's Largest and Most Active Trail Cycling Group." This club offers day-long trips around the District, Maryland and Virginia, and longer trips to West Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and even New Hampshire and Maine. Rider level varies from casual to competitive.

Potomac Pedalers Touring Club: This membership club offers 25 to 30 planned rides for all skill levels on any given spring, summer or fall weekend. In addition, the club sponsors several special events, including its annual rally, the Frederick Fall Foliage Frolic, a weekend-long event in Frederick, Md. The Potomac Pedalers Club also offers overnight trips.

Washington Area Bicyclists Association: This membership group is active in Washington area bikers' advocacy and safety issues, nature conservation, local transportation issues and safe biker access to bridges, trails and roads. In addition, the association sponsors several annual events, including the Earth Day Bike In, Bike Week and the National Capital Biking Tour.
