Sonics Top Suns in Overtime, Even Series at TwoBy Mel ReisnerAssociated Press Friday, May 2, 1997; 1:32 a.m. EDT PHOENIX, May 1 The Seattle SuperSonics survived an unbelieveable, game-tying three-pointer by Rex Chapman with 1.9 seconds left in regulation and staved off elimination by beating the Phoenix Suns, 122-115, in overtime tonight. Detlef Schrempf and Hersey Hawkins hit three-pointers in the extra period, and Shawn Kemp, after making six free throws in the last 38 seconds of regulation, hit two more to seal it in overtime. The Suns rallied from an 11-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation, and got their chance to go for the tying three-pointer when Schrempf missed the second of two free throws with 5.4 seconds left. Chapman made an over-the-shoulder, running grab of a crosscourt inbounds pass from Jason Kidd and heaved a high-arching, 25-footer that swished through the basket to tie the game at 107. Kidd sank a three-pointer 1 minute 5 seconds into overtime for a 110-107 Phoenix lead only the second lead of the game for the Suns. But Seattle battled back, drawing even on Schrempf's three-pointer and going ahead 112-110 when he hit two free throws with 2:54 to go. Gary Payton, who finished with 28 points and 14 assists, made a layup at the 1:52 mark, and Hawkins made it 117-112 with his three-pointer with 45 seconds remaining. Schrempf had 26 points in his best playoff game this series, Kemp had 24 points and 20 rebounds and Hawkins had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kidd and Kevin Johnson paced the Suns, Kidd with 23 points and 14 assists and Johnson with 23 and 11.
