Vernon Selected Playoff MVP

DETROIT (AP) -- Mike Vernon, 16-4 with a 1.76 goals-against average in the playoffs, was selected the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as most valuable player in the Detroit Red Wings' Stanley Cup sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers.

``This group of guys that I've played with this season, it's undescribable the work ethic that they put in,'' said Vernon, who also helped Calgary to the Stanley Cup title in 1989.

``It's a well-deserved trophy for all these guys here. I'm just happy for everybody and the city.''

Vernon made 27 saves Saturday night in Detroit's series-ending 2-1 victory, allowing only Eric Lindros' goal with 15 seconds remaining.
