Mich., Pa., Govs. Bet on NHL Finals

Friday, May 30, 1997 3:20 pm EDT

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge wants to put John Engler, his Michigan counterpart, on a slow-moving Zamboni.

Ridge and Engler said Friday they have made a gubernatorial wager on the outcome of the Stanley Cup finals between the Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings. The best-of-seven series begins Saturday in Philadelphia.

The penalty for the losing governor is to put on a jersey from the winning team and drive a Zamboni ice-resurfacing machine around his home team's rink.

``I can already picture Governor Engler behind the wheel of the Zamboni, bedecked in the Flyers black and orange, slowly making his way around Joe Louis Arena,'' Ridge said. ``I want him to clear up the rink.''

``Zamboni, schmamboni. I am confident the Wings will find a way to win,'' Engler responded. ``My advice to Governor Ridge is to order his Red Wings jersey soon, before they sell out. I know he'll look great in it.''

The Flyers have not won the NHL title in 22 years. It has been almost twice as long since the Red Wings won a Stanley Cup series.
