Sunday, July 28, 1996; 3:06 p.m. EDT

ATLANTA -- The United States scored five goals in the second period to open a comfortable lead and went on to a 12-8 victory over Yugoslavia for seventh place in Olympic men's water polo.

Chris Oeding of Newport Beach, Calif., scored three goals for the United States, which wound up 5-3.

``We basically did this one for pride,'' said team veteran Mike Evans, 36.

The United States got goals from five players, including Oeding, in the big second period. Oeding also scored once in the first and once in the fourth.

Wolf Wigo of New York, Troy Barnhart of Hanford, Calif., and Chris Humbert of Lodi, Calif., each scored twice.
