Cubans Cruise to Another Gold Medal
Omar Linares hit three home runs and Cuba left no question who has the world's best amateur team. Linares hit the first, the biggest and the last of Cuba's eight home runs in a 13-9 victory over Japan that earned Cuba its gold medal.
U.S. Uses Long Ball to Win the Bronze
The U.S. baseball team rebounded from a semifinal loss to Japan to win its first Olympic medal, beating Nicaragua, 10-3, for the bronze medal. The third-place finish was disappointing for the United States, but an improvement over the Barcelona Games, where the U.S. lost the consolation game and came home empty-handed with a 5-4 record.
Professionals May Come to Plate in 2000
The 1996 team may be the last all-amateur baseball team representing the United States in the Olympics. The International Baseball Association is expected to approve participation by professionals for the 2000 Games, but many technical hurdles remain to be worked out.
