Karch Kiraly Kiraly, Steffes Strike Gold
Karch Kiraly's stranglehold on the sport of volleyball -- indoors or beach -- continued, as he and Kent Steffes defeated U.S. beach volleyball teammates Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarsh, 12-5, 12-8, to win the gold medal in beach volleyball. Kiraly, 35, won two gold medals with the men's indoor volleyball teams in 1984 and 1988, but this was the first time medals were awarded in beach volleyball.
