Indurain Shows Why He's Still the Best
Miguel Indurain, who has dominated the Tour de France in recent years, added an Olympic gold medal to his collection by winning the cycling time trial. The Spanish star (pictured) was timed in 1 hour, 4 minutes, 5 seconds. Abraham Olano, also of Spain, won the silver medal in 1:04:17. Lance Armstrong, the best men's cyclist in the United States, finished the 32-mile course in sixth place.
DeMattei 3rd in 1st Mountain Bike Race
Three-time world champion Paola Pezzo of Italy won the inaugural Olympic race in women's mountain biking.
American Susan DeMattei, of Gunnison, Colo., took the bronze, while Canada's Alison Sydor won the silver. Juli Furtado, a pre-race medal favorite from the United States, finished 10th. Reigning world champion Bart Jan Brentjens of the Netherlands won the men's race, covering the 30-mile circuit in 2 hours, 17 minutes and 38 seconds. The top U.S. finisher was David "Tinker" Juarez, who finished 19th.
Six-time Champion Quits U.S. Cycling
Six-time world champion Rebecca Twigg, the best U.S. cyclist, quit the team over a feud with her national coach and didn't ride in the Olympic time trial. Twigg's departure apparently was spawned by her simmering feud with national coaching director Chris Carmichael, who criticized Twigg's training methods after her disappointing performance in the individual pursuit quarterfinals. Twigg, who was competing in her third Olympics, returned to her home in Colorado Springs, Colo.
