U.S. Jumps for Joy, if Not Medal
With a silver medal already in his pocket, American Michael Matz hoped to accomplish one more goal: to boost the U.S. equestrian team into a tie for for most medals ever won by Americans in the Olympics -- five. The dream fell short, however, as he was knocked out early. Still, with three medals, the U.S. has plenty to celebrate.
Werth Wins Individual Dressage
Isabell Werth of Germany won the Olympic gold medal Saturday in individual dressage, finishing ahead of two Dutch riders.
Werth, aboard Gigolo, had an overall score of 235.09 points after a freestyle score of 83.0 Saturday. Anky Van Grunsven of the Netherlands, on Bonfire, and teammate Sven Rothenberger, aboard Weyden, finished second and third. After holding third place for the first two days, Michelle Gibson of Roswell, Ga., faltered in the freestyle. Gibson, on Peron, scored 73.23 percent Saturday and finished fifth with an overall score of 222.83. Gibson had helped lead the U.S. team to the team dressage bronze medal.
Germans Win Gold In Show Jumping
The Olympic equestrian show jumping team competition came down to the last rider. Fortunately for Germany, that rider was the world's best -- 1992 gold medalist Ludger Beerbaum. Beerbaum's final ride helped Germany
win the team event with just 1.75 time faults. He was aboard Ratina, who won the silver in Barcelona. The United States won the silver medal with 12 faults and Brazil took the bronze with 17.25.

Virginia Couple Gets Some Family Silver
The O'Connors of Virginia, Karen and David (pictured), flawlessly cleared 12 sets of hurdles Wednesday for a bit of Olympic history as they apparently became the first husband-wife team ever to win medals in the same competition, winning silver along with two colleagues in the equestrian's team three-day event. Australia won the gold medal.
