Australian Women Lock Up Gold, 3-1
Alyson Annan scored two goals Thursday night as Australia beat South Korea, 3-1, to win their second gold medal in three Olympics and extend their unbeaten streak in tournament competition to 40 matches dating back to last year. Eight years ago, Australia beat the South Koreans, 2-0, in Seoul to win the Olympic gold medal.

U.S. Men Finish Olympics Winless
The U.S. men's field hockey team will have to wait at least four more years for a chance to win a game in Olympic field hockey. Malaysia got two goals from Lim Chiow Chuan to beat the Americans 4-1 Thursday. The United States went 0-7 in these Olympic games and are now 0-26-4 in Olympic history. The U.S. team, plagued by a punchless offense throughout these Olympic games, scored only four goals in finishing last in the 12-team field.

U.S. Women Finish in Fifth Place
The U.S. women's field hockey team finally discovered its offense, but it was two games too late. While goals by Marcia Pankrantz and Liz Tchou led the team to a 2-0 shutout of Spain, the women finished a disappointing fifth in the 1996 Olympics. The victory did clinch an appearance in next year's Champions Trophy tournament, limited to the six best teams in the world.

U-Md.'s Winning Attitude Goes National
Women's field hockey coach Missy Meharg and defender Katie Kauffman have built a winner at the University of Maryland, and hope to transfer that success into the Olympics.
