Ukraine Has Rhythm; Takes Gold and Bronze
Not even a botched routine could tarnish Ekaterina Serebryanskaya's (pictured) gold-medal performance. The Ukrainian earned perfect 5s in composition for each of her four routines and finished with 39.683 points Sunday to win the Olympic rhythmic gymnastics individual all-around. Ianina Batyrchina of Russia won silver and Elena Vitrichenko of Ukraine won bronze.

Spain Tops Bulgaria for Rhythmic Gold
Spain upset reigning world champion Bulgaria to win the first Olympic gold medal in rhythmic group gymnastics Friday. The individual competition pared its field from 37 to 20, and American Jessica Davis missed the cut, finishing 30th. The top 20 advance to semifinals Saturday, with the best 10 from that group advancing to Sunday’s finals.

Lynch, Dawes Enter Uncharted Territory
Two Washington-area gymnasts, Silver Spring's Dominique Dawes and Washington's Jair Lynch, became the first African Americans to win gymnastics medals in the history of Olympics. And they're hoping their success will open doors to other African Americans in the sport.

Beaming, Miller Grabs First Olympic Gold Medal
Shannon Miller (pictured) waited four years for an Olympic gold medal. Now she's got two. Miller won the gold medal Monday night with a near-flawless performance on the balance beam, where she tied for the silver in Barcelona. None of her five medals in 1992 was gold; she won her first last week with the rest of the U.S. women's gymnastics team.

Strug Signs With Agent
America's biggest gymnastic star is signing on with one of sports' premier agents. Kerri Strug, who made national headlines last week with a dramatic vault that brought the United States a team gymnastics gold medal, has said that she will sign with agent Leigh Steinberg. Strug said this morning her family had talked with several potential agents before deciding on Steinberg. Steinberg, who has made a career representing high-profile NFL stars like Troy Aikman and Steve Young, said Strug's parents contacted him last Saturday.

Feisty Karolyi Wards Off Critics
Bela Karolyi doesn't mind that he'll be remembered as a gruff, tough coach. To him, that's a compliment. The gymnastics coach has no problem with critics who say he pushes too hard. But he dismisses as nonsense the idea that he cares more for his personal success than for the athletes who help him attain it. And if his way of doing things is so bad, why has it become the standard in American gymnastics?

Finally, Shannon Miller Strikes Gold
Five-time Olympic medalist Shannon Miller finally realized her dream Tuesday night as the U.S. women's team made history by capturing the Olympic team gold. The gold was the first for Miller, who won an individual all-around silver medal at the 1992 Olympics.

Dominique Dawes: Elder Stateswoman
U.S. gymnast Dominique Dawes, at age 15, was the first African American to represent the United States in women's gymnastics. Then, she was a girl--young, ambitious, and more than a little bit scared. She barely can remember how she prepared for those Olympics. Now 19, she is old, at least when confined to the narrow terms of the world in which she competes. These days, she leads a busy life in suburban Maryland as a college student and athlete. In 1996, she is an elder stateswoman of the U.S. women's gymnastics team.
