Nigeria Completes the Impossible Dream
In a fitting ending to a superb Olympic tournament, Nigeria lifted Africa to the top of the soccer world for the first time. No African nation had won a major international competition. The colorful, entertaining Nigerians took care of that with a 3-2 upset of Argentina for the gold medal thanks to an 89th minute goal by Emmanuel Amunike. They did it by beating favored Brazil and Argentina in the only way they know: they attacked the opposition.
Bebeto's Hat Trick Lifts Dejected Brazil
Brazil regained some of its battered soccer pride Friday with a 5-0 rout of Portugal to win the Olympic bronze medal behind a hat trick by Bebeto. In a typical bronze-medal game with little passion, Brazil -- which lost a semifinal shocker to Nigeria, 4-3 -- quickly showed that it took the match much more seriously. In Saturday's gold medal match, Nigeria faces Argentina at Sanford Stadium at 3:45 p.m. Neither nation has ever won a Olympic soccer gold medal.
U.S. Women Top China for Soccer Gold
The U.S. women's Olympic soccer team kicked up still more nationwide interest in the world's most popular sport. The Americans defeated China,
2-1, to win the gold medal in the first Olympics to include women's soccer when Mia Hamm passed to Joy Fawcett, who set up a goal by Tiffeny Milbrett (pictured). The historic match was witnessed by a record women's crowd of 76,481 at the University of Georgia's Sanford Stadium.
'Superstar' Is Not In Her Vocabulary
To her teammates, she is awesome. For Mia Hamm, a Lake Braddock High graduate, it’s her teammates and the team that deserve that description. "This team is incredible," she said after the Americans' 2-1 win over China for the gold medal. Hamm was the team’s leading scorer in 1995, but playing on a hurt ankle, she had only one goal in the Olympics and did not score in the final. "It would have been nice, but I wouldn’t trade this victory for anything in the world," said the 24-year-old, who led North Carolina to four NCAA titles.
