U.S. Softball Team Wins GoldThe powerhouse U.S. women's softball team won the gold medal Tuesday night, breaking out of its scoring drought to defeat China, 3-1, and win the first Olympic gold medal ever awarded in the sport. Dot Richardson, at 34, the oldest member of the team, went 2-for-3 and hit a home run and fulfilled her lifelong dream of Olympic gold. All in all, writes Post columnist Thomas Boswell, it was a perfect team, a perfect field and a perfect night.

Coach Ralph Raymond scoffs at the notion that he's coaching his own Dream Team. But the numbers say the opposite. Team USA completed its coast-to-coast, pre-Olympic tour with a 60-1 record that included some truly amazing numbers. Like 441-3, the margin that Team USA outscored its opponents.
