U.S. Edges China, Wins Gold
The powerhouse U.S. women's softball team won the gold medal Tuesday night, breaking out of its scoring
drought to defeat China, 3-1, and win the first Olympic gold medal ever awarded in the sport. Dot Richardson, at 34, the oldest member of the team, went 2-for-3 and hit a home run and fulfilled her lifelong dream of Olympic gold. All in all, writes Post columnist Thomas Boswell, it was a perfect team, a perfect field and a perfect night.

Coach Denies U.S. Is a 'Dream Team'
Coach Ralph Raymond scoffs at the notion that he's
coaching his own Dream Team. But the numbers say the opposite. Team USA completed its
coast-to-coast, pre-Olympic tour with a 60-1 record that included
some truly amazing numbers. Like 441-3, the margin that Team USA
outscored its opponents.
Richardson Gets Her Olympic Shot
Dot Richardson is considered by many the greatest woman softball player ever, but the fact softball was not an Olympic sport had helped limit her name recognition. But not any more. She'll be on the first U.S. Olympic softball team, which is the favorite to take home a gold.
