'Strongest Man' Sets The New Standard
Andrey Chemerkin earned the title of "world's strongest man" on Tuesday. Again. Chemerkin, the gold medalist at the 1995 world championships, broke the world record in the clean-and-jerk on his final lift to win the gold medal with a total of 1,008 1/2 pounds.
Pound for Pound, Turk's World's Strongest Person
Naim Suleymanoglu, the Turkish Olympic champ also known as "Pocket Hercules," did it again. He broke two world records, one of them his own, stirred a Turkish cheering section into ecstatic bedlam, lifted three times his own weight in the 141-pound class and captured his third gold medal in as many Olympics. No other weightlifter has ever won three golds in a row.
Greek Lifter Wins Second Gold Medal
Greece's Pyrros Dimas once again outlifted German Marc Huster to win the gold medal, this time in the 182 3/4-pound division. Dimas also set a world record by lifting 865 1/4 pounds with his best efforts in the snatch and clean-and-jerk. Huster lifted a total of 843 1/4 pounds, while Andrzej Cofalik of Poland won the bronze with 821 pounds.
Cuban Lifter Perseveres, Earns Gold
Cuban weightlifter Pablo Lara tore a callus at the base of his right ring finger during the second of his three lifts in the snatch. He missed his third and final one Wednesday, but came back with a strong performance in the clean-and-jerk to win the gold medal in the 167 1/2-pound weight class.
Chinese Lifter Wins Gold
China's Olympic troubles have been eased at the weightlifting venue. Zhan Xugang, the 1995 world champion, provided China with its
second weightlifting gold medal Tuesday, setting three world records in the process.
