Brands, Baumgartner Win Medals
Tom Brands Tom Brands (pictured) fulfilled the promise he made to himself as a fifth-grader Friday by winning an Olympic freestyle wrestling gold medal. Brands beat surprise finalist Jang Jae-sung of South Korea, 7-0, at 136 1/2 pounds. But the biggest favorite, Bruce Baumgartner, settled for the bronze at 286 pounds -- his record fourth Olympic wrestling medal. Baumgartner avenged Thursday's loss to Andrei Shumilin with a judges' decision over the Russian.

Two Freestylers Collect Gold Medals
Kurt Angle waited out 90 seconds of indecision as the three officials conferred before he was awarded the Olympic gold medal over Iran's Abbas Jadidi in 220-pound freestyle wrestling Wednesday. Earlier at the Georgia World Congress Center, Kendall Cross, who had to beat a world champion just to reach the Olympics, defeated Giya Sissaouri of Canada 5-3 at 125 1/2 pounds for the United States' first wrestling gold medal of these games.

Olympic Snapshot Wrestlers Divided By du Pont's Money
Rarely is money an issue in Olympic wrestling. Not much goes into the sport, and not much is made it in -- especially by the wrestlers. Tom Brands, a 1993 world champion, angered some other U.S. freestylers by accepting training money from John E. du Pont after the chemical heir was charged with the shooting death of former Olympic champion Dave Schultz. The money was not significant compared to that earned by other Olympians, but many in the sport found it highly offensive.

Widow Carries On Wrestler's Passion
On the eve of the recent Olympic freestyle wrestling trials in Spokane, Wash., Nancy Schultz drove to the airport to pick up the coaches for the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club, named in honor of her late husband. It was midnight by the time she dropped them off at their hotel. Six hours later, she was in the blue seats of the Spokane Arena for a 6:20 a.m. local television interview, urging viewers to come out and watch the trials. Later, she stood on the floor near the wrestling mat and cheered on the 12 Schultz club members during their matches.
