The streak began on May 30, 1982 when Orioles Manager Earl Weaver started Ripken at third base against the Toronto Blue Jays at Memorial Stadium. The day before, Floyd Rayford started in Cal's place at third base in the second games of a doubleheader against Toronto.

Ripken moved to shortstop for good on July 1, 1982, when the Orioles played the Cleveland Indians at Memorial Stadium. The last Oriole besides Ripken to start as shortstop was Lenn Sakata, who played there on June 30, 1982 against the Indians.
