  •   Turner Says Frerotte Might Regain Starting QB Job

Gus Frerotte could be reinstated as the Washington Redskins' starting quarterback this week, Coach Norv Turner said after yesterday's 31-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys at Jack Kent Cooke Stadium.

Turner made the switch from Frerotte to Trent Green one game into the season. But Green has an 0-4 record as the Redskins' starter and struggled yesterday, and Turner said it's possible that Frerotte will be moved back atop the depth chart for Sunday's game in Philadelphia.

"As we do every week, you look at anything that can help you," Turner said. "That's probably one thing we'll look at."

Green threw incompletions on 10 of his final 13 passing attempts yesterday to cap a 13-for-29, 193-yard afternoon. Green overthrew tight end Jamie Asher for a first-quar ter interception by the Cowboys' Deion Sanders that set up a Dallas touchdown.

Green entered yesterday's game third in the league, behind only Brett Favre and Steve Young, in passing yards. But Green has thrown six interceptions this season to go with his seven touchdown passes, and the Redskins' offense has averaged only 12.5 points per game in his starts.

"I thought he did some good things in the first half," Turner said of Green's performance yesterday. "Obviously he struggled in the second half."

Green said he hasn't lost confidence in his ability and hopes he remains the starter.

"I have never been in this situation, being 0-5, at any level," Green said. "I have always been brought up or taught that no matter how bad it gets, you just continue to work hard and work your way through it. This is the approach that I know I'm going to take, and I hope the rest of the team takes.

"Obviously there are going to be some outside pressures of expectations in terms of what is going to happen in the next 11 games, and what needs to be done in the immediate future in terms of next week. I will continue to work hard and study and just do what I can to put this team in a position to win."

Frerotte began the season as the Redskins' starting quarterback, but was removed by Turner from the team's season-opening loss at Giants Stadium on Sept. 6 after throwing a pair of costly third-quarter interceptions and hurting his left shoulder making a tackle. Green finished that game, and was named the Redskins' starter by Turner the following day.
