Your Thoughts on the Redskins' Loss to Detroit

Redskins Helmet Page 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6

We asked our readers to react to Washington's loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Here is a sampling of the responses.

Another pathetic performance in a big game. Once again, the lack of coaching and leadership proves costly. Yet another diappointment with this team. Norv must go!!!

Mark Yarbro
Charlotte,N.C.

Is there anybody out there that still has any questions left? Turner must go ... it is time to clean house ... completely.

Quinn
Washington

A big game for the Redskins in December during the Norv Turner era with the expected result. The 'Skins will probably have to win all of their remaining games (and hope for a Dallas loss or two) to make the playoffs now.

Terence Schock
Weatherly, Pennsylvania

I'm tired of the skins inconsistancy. Win one week, lose the nexted. This team is not good enough to go far in the playoffs.

Jim Schaefer

As a redskin fan for thirty years, openly for 25 of them and a closet fan for that last 5 due to the embarrasing ineptitude of the current coach (and the ridicule I'd subject myself to), I must now do the unthinkable. I will be rooting for any team playing the skins for the rest of the year. Like in life, sometimes you have to do something that hurts initially but you know is for the overall good. Such is the case here. Someone last week wrote that with the Lions, Colts and Fins on tap, begin to think about what champagne to have to celebrate Norv's departure. Well, one down with two to go. Can anyone reasonably argue that the pitiful excuse of a coach we have is anything but that? Please Mr. Snyder, restore the high stamdards that were in place before the lollapalooza of pigskin blunders known as the Turner nightmEra began.

At least we don't have to put up with many more dull, trite press conferences from Norval soon.

I didn't know my wife could cuss like that. Honestly, did anybody expect anything different after watching this team with Coach Turner at the helm for the last six years? Gus looked pretty good when not under Coach Turners' insane offensive scheme, didn't he.

Dear Santa: My daddy sat before the television today with thoughts of touchdowns and a victory in his head. He watched the first quarter as the Redskins owned the ball for 10 minutes while the Lions barely managed five minutes. But, Santa....that was as close as my daddy got to being happy. Could you please give Mr. Snyder a new head coach, a new defensive coordinator, and a whole new football team that can stay onside, block, and who can catch the football? My daddy thanks you and Mr. Snyder will too.

You know why the Redskins lost on Sunday? Stephen Davis, the NFL's LEADING RUSHER!, carried the ball only two times in the second half.

We must as true fans be looking at the positives of this game. Aren't we now one game closer to Turner's dismissal? That very good! Bye Norv, good luck with your resume, don't bother putting us down as a referal.

Geez! Norv had to go and ruin one of the few things that the Skins could still be proud of - a 34 year win streak against the (ugh) Detroit Lions. Used to be that losing to a Gus Frerotte- QB'd team was as bad as losing to a Norv Turner-coached team. New returns indicate that losing to Norv's team is worse! How can the Skins let 2 rejects beat them? I think Norv is still working for the Cowpokes!

It's the same old story under Norve Turner, can't win the big one! Where was the running game today? Turner has said that he would make sure that Davis got at least 25 carries a game, but he fell short and I think that was one of the biggest factors in this loss. Davis is or was the leading rusher in the league, and you don't have to be a headcoach to know that you need to get him the ball as much as possible! Turner must go!!!! This team or any other team coached by Turner will never make the playoffs!! If the Skins can end the season 8-8 I will be suppriesed. Daniel Snyder should start interviewing possible head coaches right away so he can get a jump on other clubs looking to fill the position. It pains me to say this , but this team has no heart!!!

The only comfort I can take from another demoralizing loss is that every loss makes the likelihood of Norv Turner returning as head coach next year just that much less. Norv is a good coach as an offensive coordinator but head coach is beyond his abilities. Daniel Snyder should seriously look at Marty Schottenheimer as his head coach for next year and keep Norv as offensive coordinator.

Yes the Redskins got jobbed by the refs, but guys - it was our loser we were playing against. For years, the only way Gus could beat the Skins is to start for them. Shame on Norv, shame on everyone.

Help Wanted: A Coach with motivation; must have ability not to choke under pressure. Must be willing to allow someone else to call the offense. Must have his head in plain view instead of hidden somewhere else. This applicant must never have worked for the Dallas Cowgirls. Must be willing to win the big games as well as the easy ones. Must be willing to win more than one game in December. Coaches named Norv and Turner need not apply.

Carroll Prescott

Na..na..naa..naa, na..na..naa..naa, HEEEY good-bye, Norv! Mr. Turner start packing. You have managed to seal your fait. If I recall correctly in the first several games of the season the Redskins ran a pretty open offence. It worked wonders. Now playing about as conservative as you can it is just a matter of the opposing defense to sit back and let the skins offence play right in to their hands. Actually there really was not much of a need for Detroit to put the defense of the field the Redskins do a fine job of beating themselves. Brad Johnson did a great job! He made sure the Lions had every chance to win. I can't give all the credit to Brad. The Lions did have a lot of help from the Washington defense and special teams. (I believe they are under investigation for fraud. The charge impersonating professional football players.) You guys did a wonderful job of making the second most over rated quarterback (second only to Brand Johnson.) in the NFL look like a super star. Come on giving up almost 300 yards to Gus (I can break my own neck) Frerotte. I don't understand the defense. With the amount of talent that the defense has, it seems as though they are afraid to play tough hard-nosed football. However they have no fear in collecting those huge pay checks. Mr. Nolan if you need help packing I'll be more the happy to help you get your stuff on to a moving truck. Heck I may even supply the beer. The Redskins once again have proven that an inept coaching staff can only hide itself for so long. O’Danny boy the time has come……. Start the interviewing process. If you come up with a half decent prospect bring him in on Monday and get started on next year. There really is no need to draw this pain out any further. Firing the current coaching staff will not cause all that much of a problem. Lets face it, you know as well as every one that this season is over for the Redskins.

Four Words: RUN THE BALL STUPID!!!

I didn't get to see the game in Vermont so could someone please tell me why Stephen Davis only got the ball 12 times? When you have the leading rusher in the NFL why the hell don't you use him? Maybe he was hurt; I don't know. Bye-bye playoffs and good ridance to Norv Turner!!

Walter
Richmond, VT

Once again promises, promises. Norv what happened to the running game? You didn't even give it a chance today. I really don't understand why you would go away from what got you some wins. If Norv Turner is not gone next year this is what we have to look forward to again. What's happened to the offence these past weeks? And just because a team has not beat you in 34 years please don't tahe them lightly. Norv it's the same old story win just enough to get by and not make the playoffs. HERE COMES THE COWBOYS TO TAKE THE DIVISION LEAD. I really don't think we will make the playoss again because we will find a way to loose our way out of it. I love you Skins but get Norv Turner out of there.

I'm tired of this team letting us fans down every week. I was born in 1980, and since then there has been one constant, the Skins don't lose to the Lions. I mean, when Barry Sanders was there we would kill em. And yet we still lose. I'm really getting tired of Albert Connell's mental mistakes. We need to draft either Peter Warrick and Santana Moss to help us at reciever, Fryar won't be here forever. We shouldn't have to depend on the Cowboys to lose to stay in first. This is pathetic, we should be at least three games up in the NFC east. Maybe we do need a new coach. We should be getting Stephen Davis the ball way more, there's no excuse for being that pass happy when you've got the best running back in the league. I'm already counting the days untill the draft.

The Good: The defense played well enough to win. They really did. The Bad: The biggest reason that I miss Joe Gibbs is not all the victories. It was his patience with his running game. If he had a back that averaged 4.5 yard per carry, he would never stop running the football. Norv Turner is not as patient with it. I believe each and every first down situation the Redskins had in the second half was a pass. The lead was is reach. Only 3 and then 6 points. Yet first down passes were attempted. I am not sure if Detroit had more guys then the Redskins could block near the line of scrimmage but I would have like to see him try to punch it in there a little more. The Ugly: 14 penalties.

Look, the truth is that the Redskins will ALWAYS an underachieving team as long as Norv Turner and his staff are around. Give me one "Must Win" game Norv Turner has won in the 6 years he has coached this team. Now the Lions have the tie-breaker edge for a wild-card and Dallas has an easier schedule for the next 4 weeks and is a lock for the division title. The Redskins had their chance, and they blew it bigtime. What a disgarce they are -- and a waste of talent. I've had it -- next Sunday I'm X-Mas shopping instead of wasting my time watching these bums. In a way I'm glad Daniel Snyder didn't fire Mike Nolan -- this way Norv has no more excuses of a "disruption". The bottom line -- 6 years, no playoffs. This team desperately needs a coach to kick some sense into the players -- not to mention getting that "winning tradition" back to DC. One last note, the team needs to draft at least 2 linebackers in the first round (or get quality free agents)-- Barber, Jones and Derek Smith are just plain horrible. I have spoken and it is non-debateable. Yeah, I'm bitter...

NO playoffs this year!!!! We might win one more game. Mr.Snyder how much longer must we watch these underachievers?????????????WE could have been, No we should have been 12-4 this year. We need a real NFL coach. All that talent and no results.

where is the running game. turner has no concept on how to run a game. johnson's arm looks loke a wet noodle. too bad the skins might not win another game.

Coaching, coaching, coaching. Teams are a direct reflection of their coach. Norv maybe a good guy, but he's just not cutting it right now, and neither is this team.

This was completely expected. Taking the Eagles to overtime last week should have told you this was coming. The poetic part was Frerotte helping to drive nails into the Redskin coffin, especially after that Redskin teammate of his dressed him down on the sidelines after a loss while he was here. Yep, there IS justice on this Earth! I'll bet a lot of you will be on here saying "Mr. Snyder, will you please get rid of our coaching staff"? What you should be saying is "Snyder, you need to take your short-man complex and get YOUR tail out of here! Ha! It starts with the owner, baby!

Brad Johnson looks tired and unfocused. It looked like he was going to add consistency to the team, but that hasn't been the case. Still, I wouldn't rather have Gus back. The offense was the problem this week. The defense did its job and was making up for the offense's mistakes all day. We expect more from the offense and they are letting us down. Sorry Norv, you are a great offensive game caller, but you are lacking something that will make this team a leader. I hate to see you go somewhere else, but if you can't win by now, then maybe it is in everyone's best interest for you to be a coach somewhere else. Thanks for the memories.

this team is a complete joke and an overpaid embarrasment for the people of the metro area. i like to consider myself an oldtime redskin fan when football was football and players cared more about their performance on the field and not jitterbugging after they have made a simple tackle which they are more than compensated. live on sonny, sam and riggo.

pity sonny and sam for having to sit and watch what these bums have done to a once proud franchise. these "players" concentrate on one thing. PAYDAY.

At least this will get rid of Norv Turner! How can the Redskins season be flatering again? The only person to blame for the team not being mentally prepared is the coach.

Okay, it's official 'Skins fans: Norv Turner has officially given up. Never was that more obvious after the Lions game. Yep, he has "quit" on the team, the players, the organization, and the fans. Why do I say such as thing? Simple. He runs Stephen Davis only 12 times THE ENTIRE GAME!!! This comes after publicly saying this week that, "we're going to run the ball and use our strength" Even when the game is still very close and could go either way, Norv abandons the running game entirely and gets pass happy, throwing nearly 90% of the time, even when the game is far from decided. Net result, turnovers and another loss of a very winnable game. Norv is a bad coach who doesn't recognize the running game he has and is much to prone to quit running and pass entirely. He panics too easily in tight games & goes to the air exclusively, abandoning the game plan (running Davis). You don't think Dan Snyder can't see this too? (Hell, my 8 year old can see it!) Snyder will fire him in early January because he sees this and he is sick of it! This team will not make the playoffs this year since Norv refuses to utilize his running game. Norv and his entire staff WILL BE FIRED IN JANUARY, but that's a good thing Skins fans because we will finally be rid of Norv. He can't consistently motivate his players, they don't fear and respect him, he makes bad coaching decisions in big games late in the season, and his assistant coaches are pathetic. Again, Dan Snyder knows all of this and can hardly wait for this season to end so he can "clean house" by dumping this entire, inept coaching staff, and start to build something substantial with a competent coaching staff, (can you say "Bill Cowher?") P.S. - Here are your NFC playoff teams for this year : Rams, Vikings, Cowboys - Div. Champs Lions, Bucs, Packers - Wild cards teams. ALL THIS AND I'M A DIE HARD SKINS FAN, BUT AT LEAST I'M REALISTIC AND I CAN SEE THE OBVIOUS!!

Once again, the Redskins have failed to win the big game. The Skins may make the playoffs, but only becuase they're in the worst division in football. Let's face it, it's time to forget about all the hype about how this year's team is new and improved. It's the same type of mediocre team that has characterized Norv Turner's tenure. I'm sick of the Skins just being average--something has to change. Washington fans are fed up, and Owner Daniel Synder re realizes that. I feel that I can sum up the fans' sentiment in three words--Norv must go.

The Redskins have once again proven that they cannot stand up against a decent opponent. Turner seems ot turn completely away from the running game at the first sign of trouble, putting unnecessary pressure on Brad Johnson and the offensive line. The pass is set up by the run. When the defense expects the pass and continues to get a steady does of it, then we're looking at a lot of three and outs putting our defense on the field for extended periods of time. On another note, the replay reversal of Westbrook's catch in the end zone was ridiculous. If 1 knee equals two feet, then what does one knee AND two feet mean? Apparently an incompletion as interpreted by referee Phil Luckett. As for next week, the Cardinals have always played the Redskins tough. If the Redskins want to make a playoff run, next week is an extremely pivotal divisional match-up. GO SKINS!!

Oakton, VA

Redskins did it again, lose to a good football team. With the remaining schedule, the 'skins will be LUCKY to even make it to the first round. Norv & Mike- start packing your bags! Mr. Snyder- two words for you... Bill Cowher. The Redkins need a coach who can enable his team to play inspired football.

Brad Johnson, thanks for playing. When will this team ever win a big game? Best case scenario for the season: finish 9-7 or 10-6, limp into the playoffs, lose in the first round.
