Quote Sheet From Sunday's Game
Coach Steve Spurrier Opening statement It was frustrating. Dropped passes. We basically gave them two touchdowns. So the Eagles are good enough that you can't spot them a couple touchdowns. We did that. I don't know what to say. I'm frustrated with a lot of these guys, and they're probably frustrated with me. I don't know what to say. We'll try to coach better. We'll start with me and all the assistant coaches. Can't keep the guys from playing within the rules. Q: Did you sense Donovan McNabb had something to prove after what Rush Limbaugh said about him last week? A: I don't think the Eagles paid a lot of attention to what that guy said to tell you the truth. I told Donovan after the game I was sorry he had to go through all that stuff this week but in the long run maybe something good will come out of it. He said, "Yeah, let's hope something good comes out of it." They're just out there playing ball, and we're out there trying to play ball. We just played with a lot more errors than they did. Q: How pivotal was the personal foul against Regan Upshaw in the fourth quarter? A: We talked about that after the Giants game. ... He goes in there and shoves a guy a little bit after the play. That's very frustrating. When players do that, to me it's very selfish. When players commit fouls after the ball is dead. I don't what to do about it. I wish our guys overall would be a lot accountable for their actions. We're going to try to encourage them to do that. Q: Was Patrick Ramsey hurt in the game? A: He landed on his shoulder in the first quarter and shook it off a little bit. He didn't get hit again fortunately. Q: Do you consider this game progress considering how the Eagles handled you guys last season? A: Nah, it's not progress, just like losing to the Giants all the time. I don't know. I don't have the answers fellas. We find a way to lose. Or they find a win you could say. I think we can play with them, but playing with them and winning is two different things. Q: What's causing all the problems with all the audibles? A: I don't have the answer for that. You need to ask the lineman and the line coach and see what he says. We talk about it during the week that we're going to audible, and we try to tell them at times we're going to need to change the play. I don't have the answer for that. Q: Was the two-point play what you wanted? A: Exactly. We were hoping they'd blitz, and LC went on a little short corner route there, and I don't know if Patrick didn't get the grip right away. He sort of held it a little long. He had an excellent game, hung in there and played tough. Again he's just a second-year player. We didn't help him out a lot with protection and dropped balls. Q: What happened on the last touchdown to Darnerien McCants? A: I think they got their coverage a little screwed up. They didn't have anyone deep, and once he got past the linebacker, there was nobody back there. They mess up occasionally. Fortunately we had plenty of time for Dar to get past those linebackers. It took probably about four seconds for all that to happen. Laveranues Coles Q: Can you talk about playing against the Eagles defense? A: The Eagles played a great game, and they came out with a lot of coverages. Not only did they play the run well, but their coverage was great, and we have to give credit to their defense. We got off to a slow start again, and we shot ourselves in the foot tonight, and Coach Spurrier said it right that we are not going to be able to drop balls and win. This is setting us back. Q: What can you as a team do to correct the mistakes? A: We all said at the end of the game that we all need to take a look in the mirror and look into ourselves. We are going to have to come out and practice hard and play better. Q: What did you think of the Eagles' secondary? A: The secondary did not do anything special tonight because they just played. This is the NFL, and they are not a minor league team because anyone can step on the field and make plays. Trung Canidate Q: Can you talk about the Eagles' defense? A: The Eagles' run defense is the No. 1 run defense in the league, but we are all grown men, and we all put our clothes on the same way. Ultimately, we lost tonight, and we did not do enough to win. I do not like to lose, and we are going to have to look at the film and see what we did wrong. Q: Do you feel like you shot yourselves in the foot? A: We have to give the Eagles credit tonight because they won, but this offense ultimately can do a lot more. We can definitely do a lot more than what we are doing right now. The defense and the special teams and everyone could do a little more. That is the bottom line. Patrick Ramsey Q: Did the sack in the first quarter impact your throwing? A: I landed on my shoulder, and I injured it before, but I was able to throw. I'm not going to be scared of getting hit. Q: What happened on the screen that the Eagles intercepted and returned for a touchdown? A: My hand got it. I tried to throw the ball, and my hand got hit, and it just popped straight up. Q: Can you talk about the two-point conversion try? A: Laveranues Coles was wide open, and I overthrew the ball. It's as simple as that. He got open, and he did a good job, and I hurried up and threw the pass. Q: How frustrating was it to come within two points of sending the game into overtime? A: Our special teams and our defense kept us in the game. They played very well. I think we made so many mistakes that it could have gotten ugly. But they kept us in the game even though we made all those mistakes. © Copyright 2003 washingtonpost.com Back to the top
