Seahawks place kicker Josh Brown accounted for the only scoring of the first quarter with a 53-yard field goal. Washington's two drives ended with a blocked field goal and a punt. In the second quarter, the Redskins managed to move the ball almost effortlessly. Mark Brunell capped a 16-play, 85-yard drive with a touchdown pass to tight end Robert Royal with less than three minutes left in the half.

The Redskins scored on a touchdown and a field goal thanks to several clutch third-down throws by Brunell, but the Seahawks put together an improbable drive that kept the game close. Seattle finally squeezed some success out of its running game, relying primarily on Shaun Alexander during an eight-play, 85-yard touchdown drive that made the fourth quarter competitive.

Hasselbeck threw a touchdown pass to Darrell Jackson with less than two minutes left to tie the game at 17, and overtime seemed apparent. The game almost didn't get there, though, because Kelly Herndon intercepted a Brunell pass to set up a 47-yard field goal attempt for Seattle. Brown's kick ricocheted off the left upright with one second left, and regulation ended in a tie.

The Redskins successfully converted three third downs to set up a 34-yard field goal attempt for place kicker Nick Novak with 9:29 left in overtime. Even after a delay-of-game penalty lengthened Novak's kick to 39 yards, the Redskins' replacement place kicker calmly booted the ball through the middle of the uprights, securing a 20-17 win.
