Chapter 4, Page 143 (Cont'd From 126)

"The things on the table when we left were what we came back for, except for
`now money' " paid immediately to players at the end of the
strike, Jeff Bostic recalled. "There was a scale. With four or more years of experience you got $60,000. Obviously, they
gave the older guys more so they would persuade the younger guys. But was it
worth 57 days? No."
In the first game after the
strike, the Redskins beat the Giants, 27-17, in East
Rutherford, New Jersey. Even with the layoff,
Theismann was sharp, completing 16 of 24 passes for 185 yards, two touchdowns and a third straight game without an
interception. Then, after nearly a year between meaningful games at
RFK Stadium, the Redskins defeated the Eagles, 13-9. The victory pushed the Redskins record to 4-0.
After a loss to Dallas at RFK, the Redskins regrouped, but they still were having
trouble scoring. The offense had averaged just 16.6 points in the first three
post-strike games.
By then, however, Moseley was on a field-goal roll, making 14 straight and
providing the special care he liked to give to his kicking foot. He usually kept it in a
down-lined slipper or a garbage bag. That was in addition to the six pairs of socks he always wore.
