"We knew we had a mismatch with Jacoby on Bokamper," Grimm said. "Usually, if Bokamper pinched in, we'd double him. If he didn't, I'd go out after the linebacker." Miami cornerback Don McNeal slipped at the snap, and his attempted arm tackle of Riggins failed miserably. Riggins rambled down the left sideline for a 43-yard touchdown to put the Redskins ahead for good, 20-17, with 10:01 left in the game.

A 6-yard touchdown catch by Garrett gave the receivers of the Fun Bunch a chance to dance and leap for a collective high-five in the Rose Bowl, but it was the running game that had dominated Miami's Killer Bees to produce the 27-17 final score. Riggins won the MVP award with 38 carries and 166 yards, both Super Bowl records at the time.

President Reagan called the Redskins's jubilant locker room after the game, but Riggins said, "At least for tonight, Ron's the president, but I'm the king."
