United States Edges China for World Cup Title

After a scoreless overtime tie, goalkeeper Briana Scurry saved a penalty kick and Brandi Chastain (pictured) scored the winner on a penalty kick of her own to give the United States a 5-4 win over China and its second Women's World Cup title. The crowd of 90,185 at the Rose Bowl on July 10 was the largest to witness a women's athletic event.

D.C. United beat the Los Angeles Galaxy, 2-0, Nov. 21 to win their third championship in four seasons. Jaime Moreno and game MVP Ben Olsen (pictured) each scored and goalkeeper Tom Presthus recorded the shutout.

Manchester United Wins Triple Crown
Substitutes Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solksjaer scored in injury time as Manchester United beat Bayern Munich, 2-1, May 26 for the Champions League title to become only the fourth club to sweep the triple crown.

Jose Manuel Abundis scored in the 57th minute as Mexico defeated the United States, 2-1, on March 13 to win its third consecutive U.S. Cup and hand the Americans their first loss under Coach Bruce Arena.

Miguel Zepeda scored twice to lead Mexico to 4-3 victory over Brazil on Aug. 4 in the Confederations Cup finals in Mexico City.
