ISTANBUL, Dec 6 – Substitute Umit Davala converted a 51st minute penalty to give Galatasaray a 1-0 win over Paris St Germain in their Champions League, second phase match on Wednesday.

Davala, who came on for the injured Belozoglu Emre in the first half, sent goalkeeper Lionel Letizi the wrong way from the spot after Talal El-Karkouri fouled striker Mario Jardel.

It was PSG's first match under new coach Luis Fernandez -- who took over from the sacked Philippe Bergeroo on Monday—and the new man was unable to work any magic.

The French side came into the group B game without a win in any of their previous eight matches and without a key pair in injured playmaker Jay Jay Okocha and striker Nicolas Anelka, who made a surprise appearance for the final 20 minutes.

"I'm disappointed we lost but satisfied we fought for the whole 90 minutes," said Fernandez. "This is a young team that will get better."

The Turkish side, UEFA Cup winners last season, dominated without creating many chances. But they seized their opportunity when it came.

PSG goalkeeper Letizi was outstanding in the first half to keep his side in contention.

Hasan Sas, who switched between the left wing and down the middle, was the main danger early on, forcing one particularly good save from Letizi.

After half an hour the goalkeeper did well to stop an Emre free kick and then a header from defender Capone.

Just before the break Letizi was again called into action to stop a free kick from Hasan Sas.

PSG enjoyed more possession after the goal but even the introduction of Anelka, who had not been expected to play again this year because of a thigh injury, and Brazilian Christian failed to produce an equaliser.

Their best chances fell to Laurent Leroy who had a goal disallowed for a foul on goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel after 64 minutes and then shot into the side-netting six minutes later.

Galatasaray drew 2-2 away to AC Milan in their opening group match while PSG lost 3-1 at home to Deportivo Coruna and are in dire straits after two defeats.
