UEFA Cup Tirol Beat Stuttgart in Ill-Tempered Match

INNSBRUCK, Austria, Oct 26 – A second half goal by Wolfgang Mair gave Austrian champions Tirol Innsbruck a 1-0 win over Germany's VfB Stuttgart in an ill-tempered UEFA Cup second round first leg match on Thursday.

Both teams ended the match with 10 men, with Stuttgart having Jens Todt sent off for a 30th minute foul on Alfred Hoertnagl.

Tirol's Michael Baur was sent off for unruly behaviour in the 89th minute.

Mair's 54th minute goal was his second in the UEFA tournament for a club that stunned Italy's Fiorentina last month by knocking them out of the first round.

The ball landed at Mair's feet after Stuttgart goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand was unable to hold a header from Walter Kogler.
