PAOK, who clawed back a 1-0 first leg deficit to take the tie 3-1 on aggregate, became the second Greek team to beat an Italian side in 24 hours following Panathinaikos's 3-1 win over Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday. In other early action, former European champions Liverpool beat Slovan Liberec 3-2 in the Czech Republic to advance 4-2 on aggregate and stay on course to win the UEFA Cup for the first time since 1976. Germany's Werder Bremen, crushed Genk 5-2 in Belgium for a 9-3 aggregate victory while VfB Stuttgart of Germany overturned a one-goal first leg deficit to beat Tirol Innsbruck of Austria 3-1 for a 3-2 aggregate win and Nantes of France beat MTK Hungaria 1-0 in Hungary to go through 3-1 on aggregate. While Udinese were going out, Italian clubs Parma and Roma both survived tricky ties against Dinamo Zagreb and Boavista respectively. Parma lost 1-0 to Dinamo in Croatia but came through 2-1 on aggregate, while Roma were held to a 1-1 draw by Boavista in Rome but won the tie 2-1 on aggregate. There were hat-tricks for Ludek Zelenka of Slavia Prague who led his team to a 4-1 win over OFI of Crete for a 6-3 aggregate success, and for Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro, who scored three times in Werder's 5-2 win over Genk. Udinese, who have won four and drawn one of their first five Serie A matches this season to top the table from Roma by a point, went into the match having lived dangerously in the tournament. They needed an injury time goal to beat PAOK in the first leg after squeezing through the Intertoto Cup to qualify for the UEFA Cup. And ultimately the one goal they scored in the first leg was not enough. PAOK's Argentina substitute Patricio Camps brought the tie level after 72 minutes and then added a second 12 minutes into extra time. Nikos Froussos wrapped it up for PAOK with their third six minutes later.
