UEFA Cup Liverpool Advance as Owen Scores in Return

LIBEREC, Czech Republic, Nov 9 – Michael Owen, fit again after a serious head injury, made a dazzling return as Liverpool advanced to the third round of the UEFA Cup with a convincing 3-2 win (aggregate 4-2) over Czechs Slovan Liberec on Thursday.

Owen came on as an 82nd minute substitute and made an impact within seconds. The 20-year-old picked up a throw-in from Nick Barmby, burst past two defenders in the penalty area and scored with a deflected shot into the top corner of the net.

It was the first time the England international had played since he had 13 stitches in a head wound after being knocked unconscious in a collision with Derby County defender Chris Riggott last month.

"I don't think I'll ever score as fast as that again," said Owen. "It was a decent performance in the end by the lads."

With a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, Liverpool braced themselves for an all-out attack from Liberec.

The Czechs struck nine minutes into the match when Jiri Stajner headed in a long cross by Roman Jun.

But the English team hit back with a carbon-copy goal in the 32nd minute when Nick Barmby nodded in Christian Ziege's free- kick.

Liverpool forced the early pace in the second half and Emile Heskey's drive was magnificently saved by a diving Zbynek Hauzr.

But Heskey would not be denied again, taking Vladimir Smicer's 76th minute centre and blasting a shot that Hauzr could only palm into the corner of his net.

Owen then made his dramatic contribution before David Breda scored a late consolation for Liberec with a powerful shot in the 85th minute.
