Lausanne's Argentine striker Javier Mazzoni scored the goal in the 38th minute when Marcin Kuzba headed on to him just outside the area and he swung a drifting shot past the Dutch club's goalkeeper Fred Grim. The Swiss side dominated play in the opening half, with Kuzba the dangerman. He had a shot cleared off the line and two others sail just wide of a diving Grim.
Ajax, who breezed through the first round with a comprehensive 9-0 aggregate win over Ghent, had the better of play after the break but could not get past 'keeper Eric Rapo.
