The UEFA Cup is a club competition contested by those clubs that finish in leading positions behind the champions in their domestic top league, the winners of the League Cup competition in certain countries, the three winners of the final matches in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, and one club from each of the three top associations in UEFA's annual Fair Play assessment. Also, National Champion clubs which do not qualify for the UEFA Champions League in a particular season go on to take part in the same season's UEFA Cup.

Near the beginning of each domestic league's season the UEFA Cup begins. A draw is held to determine the 48 matchups involving the participating clubs. In the first round, each matchup plays a home-and-away series with the team scoring the highest aggregate goals of the two games advancing to the next round of play.

Another five such rounds are played, again using the home-and-away series, with the field being whittled down each round. When only two clubs remain, a single-game UEFA Cup final is played to determine the champion.

    Current Champion: Liverpool
