OPORTO, Portugal, Sept 26 – Two first-half goals earned Boavista a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League match on Wednesday and kept them on top of Group B.

Boavista opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when a long forward pass from Armando Petit caught out the advancing Borussia midfield and found Brazilian striker Elpidio Silva

He managed to beat defender Christian Woerns and then fire home past goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.

Bolivian freekick specialist Erwin Sanchez increased Boavista's lead in the 38th when he converted a set piece from 25 metres out. Lehmann got a hand to the ball but could not stop it from hitting the top right-hand corner of the net.

Marcio Amoroso grabbed Borussia's only goal in the 75th minute when he picked up a long cross from Fredi Bobic after moving forward from left to right to nip inside the area. Unmarked, the Brazilian forward easily beat goalkeeper Ricardo Pereira.

The result helped Boavista to take a big step towards qualifying for the second round of the tournament.

The Portuguese team now lead Group B with seven points from three games, with three left to play in the first round, while Liverpool are in second place on five points.

Boavista were nearly on the receiving end of the type of surprise early goal they scored in their previous European ties this season, when Woerns forced Boavista goalkeeper Ricardo Pereira to tip the ball over the bar with a powerful 25-metre shot in the fourth minute.

The home side used the same line-up that fought Liverpool to a 1-1 draw, but their typically fast counter-attacks at first failed to unsettle a calm Borussia midfield and the visitors began to build up a confident passing game.

However, persistent runs by Boavista's Brazilian attacking trio of Duda Ventura, Alexandre Goulart and Elpidio Silva paid off in the 22nd minute when they caught out Borussia at the back for Silva to set the home team on their way.

TIGHTER

Borussia tightened up their midfield after the interval and made more use of striking pair Marcio Amoroso and Jan Koller.

Koller got his first real chance in the 75th minute when he received a pass from Amoroso and forced a save from Pereira but the Czech striker hit the rebound wide.

Amoroso then grabbed Borussia's only goal in the 75th minute.

Petit missed a chance to score a third goal for Boavista three minutes from the whistle, when he hit the bar from 25 metres.
