OPORTO, Portugal, Sept 19 – Boavista grabbed three first-half goals to secure a deserved 3-1 win over Dynamo Kiev in group B of the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Portuguese side caught the visitors cold with an early goal, just as they did against Liverpool last week at Anfield.

Bolivian forward Erwin Sanchez opened the scoring in the third minute with a free kick from 30 metres that goalkeeper Olexander Filimonov misjudged as it went inside his right post.

Kiev struck back within a minute as Boavista goalkeeper Ricardo palmed a high ball to the feet of unmarked Romanian midfielder Tiberiu Ghioane and he scored from inside the box.

Brazilian winger Elpidio Silva put Boavista back in front on 10 minutes when he beat Filimonov from the edge of the box after receiving a neat forward pass from compatriot Alexandre Goulart.

Boavista, fielding the same team who held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw, settled down with their familiar Brazilian forward line, but without the frantic harrying or rough tackling that brought them a rash of yellow cards at Anfield.

The Portuguese champions were occasionally caught out by swift counter-attacks from Kiev, whose long forward passes and crosses into the area opened up space much to the annoyance of Boavista trainer Jaime Pacheco.

But the home side took a 3-1 lead on the half-hour when a long left wing cross from Silva was headed home by Duda Ventura, who had been left unmarked by defender Vladyslav Vashchyuk as he ran forward trying to catch the Brazilian striker offside.

In the second half, Kiev tightened up their defence and kept the pressure on Boavista with more attacks on the break, but they lacked the finishing power to get back into the match.

They missed their best chances when Serhiy Fedorov hit the bar in the 49th minute and Ghioane shot just wide of the right post four minutes from time after finding a clear path past three Boavista defenders on the edge of the area.

The Portuguese side lead group B with four points ahead of Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, who each have two from two games, with Kiev at the bottom on just one point.
