OPORTO, Portugal, Oct 24 – Liverpool were left on the brink of reaching the second phase of the Champions League as they maintained their unbeaten record in Group B with a 1-1 draw at Boavista on Wednesday.

Liverpool, who remain top of the group by one point from Boavista and Borussia Dortmund, now need a draw at their Anfield home in their final match next week against the German side to be sure of going through.

The four-times European Champions, playing in the continent's premier club competition this season for the first time in 16 years, opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Danny Murphy chipped in a free kick after a foul on Robbie Fowler.

The Portuguese side, who held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at Anfield on September 11th, equalised in the 60th minute when Silva struck with a powerful far post header.

Liverpool played the match without their manager Gerard Houllier who was recovering in a Liverpool hospital after major heart surgery 10 days earlier.
