KIEV, Oct 30 – Boavista edged into the second group phase of the Champions League despite losing their last group B match 1-0 to Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday.

The Portuguese champions pipped Borussia Dortmund for second place on goal difference after the Germans lost 2-0 to group winners Liverpool at Anfield.

Kiev's first win of the competition came too late to prevent them finishing last in the group.

"We gave up an easy goal and it could have cost us what we were going for—making it through to the next round," Boavista manager Jaime Pacheco said.

"But we are leaving Kiev with a good frame of mind."

After an even first half with few chances, Olexander Melashchenko got the only goal three minutes after the break, converting a pass from Maxim Shatskikh.

Boavista then battled back with numerous chances, Duda hitting the post in the 56th minute and Marcio Santos robbed by Ukraine international keeper Vitaly Reva 13 minutes later.

Reva also made several saves to deny Bolivian Erwin Sanchez.

Kiev had further chances of their own as a curling Melashchenko shot in the 65th minute went just wide and a fierce drive from Uzbek forward Shatskikh was stopped brilliantly by Portuguese keeper Ricardo Pereira.

"We wanted to win very badly today and go out with our heads held high," Dynamo assistant coach Anatoliy Demyanenko said.

"But our victory today is unfortunately a little too late.

"Boavista can do very well from here on," Demyanenko said. "I am sure the Portuguese will cause problems for their rivals in the next round."
