MOSCOW, Oct 30 – Lokomotiv Moscow beat a largely second-string Real Madrid 2-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday to finish third in group A and secure a consolation place in the third round of the UEFA Cup.

With temperatures just above freezing, the Spanish champions looked content to hold out for a scoreless draw on a rain-soaked pitch at Moscow's Dynamo Stadium.

But the Russians, who lost injured captain Igor Chugainov midway through the first half, had other ideas, twice taking advantage of loose marking in Real's penalty area to score once in each half.

Maxim Buznikin, who knocked in Dmitry Loskov's free kick in the 30th minute, and Igor Cherevchenko, who re-directed a Marat Izmailov low cross home shortly after the interval, powered Lokomotiv, to their second straight win.

They upset Anderlecht 5-1 in Brussels last week.

Real, already assured of a place in the second phase two weeks ago, rested five key players ahead of Sunday's domestic league clash with Barcelona while Roberto Carlos, Guti, Geremi Aitor Karanka and Savio were out with various injuries.

Real, who have yet to record a victory in any of their seven visits to the Russian capital, rested Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Raul Gonzalez, Fernando Hierro and Michel Salgado while first-choice goalkeeper Iker Casillas watched the whole match from the bench.

Real, who posted a convincing 4-0 win over Lokomotiv in Madrid six weeks ago, had the first real scoring chance in the game as Fernando Morientes and Pedro Munitis hit the post and the crossbar within seconds of each other just before Buznikin's goal.

But the Spaniards rarely bothered Lokomotiv goalkeeper Ruslan Nigmatullin after the interval as the Russians dominated in the second half.

Lokomotiv coach Yuri Syomin was satisfied with the outcome although his team wasted several chances to add to their total late in the match.

"I have to feel a happy man tonight although we came a bit short of qualifying for the second round," he said.

"But we gained a lot of experience playing in our first Champions League competition and if we had had better luck in some of our group matches we could have finished second."

Real coach Vincente del Bosque did not look too disappointed either.

"Obviously, we can't say that we're totally happy with the score but we had our chances in this game," he said. "Lokomotiv were just a better team tonight."

Real won the group with 13 points, followed by Roma (9), Lokomotiv (7) and Anderlecht (3).
