MADRID, Oct 24 – Roma joined Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League after the teams drew 1-1 in group A on Wednesday.

The Italians secured their place in the second group phase as Lokomotive Moscow's 5-1 win at Anderlecht ended the Belgian side's slim hopes.

Real Madrid made certain of finishing top of the group with a Luis Figo penalty 15 minutes from time.

Francesco Totti put Roma ahead on 35 minutes, finishing from close range after a Vincent Candela cross picked him out in the area.

Gabriel Batistuta saw a header deflected wide just after the break and the Argentine cracked a free kick against the bar on 66 minutes.

Real kept pressing forward, though, and on 75 minutes they got their reward as referee Hellmut Krug ruled that Aldair had used his hand to clear an overhead kick from Fernando Morientes.

Figo stepped up to slot in the equaliser and Real, who had already booked a place in the second phase with four wins from their first four games, were able to maintain their unbeaten start to the competition.

Roma went into the game needing a win to take them through regardless of the result from the Anderlecht game and they had the Real defence worried early on.

In the fourth minute Batistuta was left unmarked at the far post and his header from Cafu's cross brought a fine save from Real keeper Cesar.

Cafu then flashed a shot just wide as the ball broke to him in space on the right.

Raul should have put Real ahead on 19 minutes after a fine move on the left worked a clear opening for him.

The Spanish international striker missed an even better chance on the half-hour mark.

Zinedine Zidane, making his first Champions League appearance for Real, set up Morientes and Francesco Antonioli did well to keep out his shot. The ball fell to an unmarked Raul but his left-foot shot went wide of an open goal.

Candela's brilliant run and cross then set up Totti for the opening goal and Roma looked odds on to add to their advantage.

After several nervous moments at the start of the second half Real gradually worked their way back into the game, though.

Raul missed his third glaring chance of the game, hesitating when through on goal, and substitute Santiago Solari flashed a shot just wide after being picked out by Figo.

Roma players protested furiously at the award of the penalty, as defender Jonathan Zebina was lying injured in the area when the attempted overhead from Morientes was handled.

However, Figo kept his cool to level the scores.
