Anderlecht Finish Bottom After Draw at Roma
Reuters
ROME, Oct 30 Anderlecht missed out on a place in the UEFA Cup after they drew 1-1 with AS Roma in their final Champions League game on Tuesday to finish bottom of group A. Roma had already assured qualification for the second phase and fielded a weakened side with just three players from the team who won Saturday's Rome derby. Anderlecht needed a win to have any chance of finishing third and went ahead in the 11th minute when Romanian midfielder Alin Stoica fed Ivica Mornar and the Croat fired past Roma keeper Ivan Pelizzoli with a sweetly-struck shot from 20 metres out. Pelizzoli got down well in the 21st minute to keep out a Stoica drive but then Roma got a grip on the game and spent the rest of the opening 45 minutes camped in the Belgian half. Roma's Brazilian midfielder Emerson had a strong claim for a penalty turned down when he appeared to be brought down by Walter Basaggio, and then Anderlecht keeper Filip De Wilde saved well from a Marco Delvecchio header. Marcos Assuncao then struck the upright with a beautiful curling free-kick and De Wilde was in action again to keep out a volley from Gianni Guigou. Roma got their deserved equaliser seven minutes after the break when Guigou put a ball over the top to Delvecchio, who rode a weak challenge from Glen de Boeck before cutting inside and firing home. With defeat apparently averted, Roma continued to play the better football and enjoy the greater forward possession but they lacked urgency and created few real problems for the Anderlecht defence. Roma coach Fabio Capello gave a run out to youth team striker Daniele De Rossi and veteran Argentine striker Abel Balbo as the game fizzled out. With Lokmotiv Moscow beating Real Madrid 2-0, Anderlecht would have finished bottom of the group whatever the result but after their 5-1 hammering from the Russians in Brussels last week they at least managed to end their European campaign with a respectable result.
