| | Real Battle Past Bayern to Face Barca in Semis Reuters
MADRID, April 10 Real Madrid battled their way to a 2-0 win over European champions Bayern Munich in a bruising Champions League quarter-final at the Bernabeu on Wednesday to triumph 3-2 on aggregate. Defender Ivan Helguera grabbed the crucial goal on 69 minutes after he slid in at the far post to turn in a Roberto Carlos cross. Substitute Guti then added a second five minutes before time when he clipped in over keeper Oliver Khan after Raul had fought his way past the Bayern defence before crossing to his team mate. The win means the Spanish champions, who trailed 2-1 after the first leg, will meet arch-rivals Barcelona in the semifinals later this month. The two sides have met twice before in the European Cup in 1960 and 1961 with a victory apiece for either side. But Real's Luis Figo will miss the first leg against his former side at the Nou Camo after receiving a booking for his part in a scuffle with Bayern striker Elber. Real pushed forward from the first whistle, forcing two corners in the first six minutes. The Spanish champions spurned three gilt-edged opportunities to level the tie within the fist quarter. On six minutes Santiago Solari twisted his way past two Bayern defenders before slipping a perfect pass into the heart of the area, but with the goal at his mercy the advancing Raul failed to connect. Five minutes later strike partner Fernando Morientes somehow contrived to do the same after Figo had pierced the Bayern defence with a pin-point cross. The Real centre-forward escaped the attentions of his markers soon after but Thomas Linke was alert to the danger and covered back to snuff out the danger. Real dominated the possession, but with Stefan Effenberg orchestrating affairs in midfield Bayern threatened on several occasions with their lightning breaks. Hasan Salihamidzic finished off one attack with a sharp volley from the edge of the area, but his shot ended up in Cesar's arms. WAVE OF ATTACKS Although Real laid siege to the Bayern area for much of the first half the German side's back four continued to stand firm against the wave of attacks. Samuel Kuffour and Bixente Lizarazu constantly frustrated the Real forwards with their superb close marking, while keeper Oliver Khan was secure as ever between the posts. As Real began to tire just before the break it was the reigning champions that had the clearest scoring chances. Brazilian striker swept wide from a Roque Santa Cruz cross after Kuffour had muscled his way past the Real defence on 40 minutes. Santa Cruz fired off a venomous shot on the stroke of halftime, but once again Cesar reacted sharply to deny the Paraguayan. The Spanish champions renewed their onslaught at the start of the second half with Zinedine Zidane hitting the post with a fine curling shot on 53 minutes. But it was not until Helguera struck that Real were able to breathe more easily. Just over a quarter of an hour later Raul teased his way past two defenders before setting Guti up for Real's second. Tempers flared in the final minutes and Salihamidzic was sent off in injury time for a late tackle on Solari.
