LENS, France — Defender Marc Rieper headed in the only goal as Denmark beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 in the World Cup today.

After strikers Ebbe Sand and Martin Jorgensen both squandered easy chances, the 30-year-old centerback slammed home the winner off Brian Laudrup's cross in the 68th minute.

The Saudi team that rarely threatened Peter Schmeichel in the Danish goal, but Denmark missed several chances in the first half by Sand, Brian Laudrup and Rieper.

The Saudis best chance was missed when Schmeichel made a diving, fingertip save from a free kick by Saeed Owairan.

Mohammed Al Deayea, the Saudi goalkeeper, was finally beaten in the 68th minute after punching out a cross. The ball was fed in to Jorgensen, who passed out to Brian Laudrup with the Saudi defense trying to catch the Danes offside.

Laudrup floated in a cross from the right and Rieper climbed above a defender to head home from 8 yards.
