Italy Advances With 2-1 Win Over Austria Associated Press Tuesday, June 23, 1998; 12:06 p.m. EDT SAINT-DENIS, France Christian Vieri fired his fourth goal of the World Cup Tuesday, and Roberto Baggio his second, as Italy qualified for the second round with a 2-1 against Austria. The defeat puts Austria out of the World Cup. Vieri's strike came in the 48th minute. Alessandro Del Piero, who had just been fouled, took a delicate free kick from the left of the penalty area, and Vieri climbed high above the Austrian defense to head powerfully past goalkeeper Michael Konsel. Baggio tied the game up in the 89th minute when he tapped in a cross from Filippo Inzaghi as Austria surged forward in search of an equalizer.
Andres Herzog scored for Austria with a penalty in the 92nd minute after Hannes Reinmayr had been pulled down, but the goal was not enough to save Austria from first round elimination. © Copyright 1998 The Associated Press World Cup Front | History | Gallery | Venues | Teams | Schedule |
