Gianluca Pozzi of Italy turned pro in 1984 and has had a long, unspectacular career. Lately, though, Pozzi has been climbing the rankings and yesterday he gave Belgium's Filip Dewulf a tough third-round match at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic before losing, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Dewulf, the fifth seed, had his hands full with the veteran. Dewulf was down 5-2 and survived a set point when Pozzi hit a routine forehand into the net. Pozzi, whose highest career ranking of 53rd came in 1992, is currently 58th.

"I didn't know what to do," Dewulf said. "Everything he does looks so easy when you play him, but he's got such good touch. I finally found my groundstrokes, and I was a little lucky in the [tiebreaker]."

Pozzi, 33, was disappointed with his performance. He was particularly upset about his collapse, which was due largely to his first serve. His first serve was successful just three times in the two games he was broken during the first set. "I just gave him the match," Pozzi said. "I was playing well, but I started to get tight and he started playing better."

Pozzi was the second oldest player in the main draw. The oldest, Jimmy Arias, has been retired for several years but recently decided to play in the Legg Mason. But unlike Arias, who also lost in the first round, Pozzi doesn't plan to retire in the near future. "I'm still as fit as I was before, and I still enjoy the game," Pozzi said.

Agassi Charity
More than 60 children from two Washington area youth groups came to the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center for the inaugural Andre Agassi Foundation Adventure Tour. The children, from the Langston/Carver Terrace Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington and the Washington Tennis Foundation, were given tips by local pros.

Agassi, whose charitable foundation has raised more than $8 million in the last three years for underprivileged children in Las Vegas, did not make an appearance.

Davis Cup Reunion
Four players who played in last weekend's U.S.-Belgium Davis Cup quarterfinal in Indianapolis are at Legg Mason and doing well. Agassi and Jim Courier led the U.S. team to a 4-1 victory over Dewulf and Christophe Van Garsse. All four players have advanced the round of 16. . . .

Bob and Mike Bryan, who recently completed brilliant collegiate careers at Stanford, made a successful ATP Tour pro doubles debut Wednesday night by beating Mexico's Bernardo Martinez and Oscar Ortiz, 6-3, 6-2.

The twin brothers helped the Cardinal earn a fourth consecutive NCAA championship. Bob also became the second player to earn the NCAA triple crown, winning the team, singles and doubles titles. He and Mike won the doubles title, and have continued their success by winning three lower-level professional tournaments in the last couple weeks.
