Hingis Finishes Slam by Winning Doubles

NEW YORK, Sept. 14 – Martina Hingis hoped, out loud, that Lindsay Davenport would celebrate her U.S. Open women's singles title a little too vigorously Saturday night, and arrive at the National Tennis Center tired for their rematch in the women's doubles final. With her doubles record this season, Hingis hardly needed the edge.

Teaming with Jana Novotna, Hingis completed a sweep of the 1998 Grand Slam women's doubles titles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Davenport and Natasha Zvereva this afternoon. Hingis won the Australian Open title with Mirjana Lucic before joining Novotna to capture the French Open, Wimbledon, and today's title. She is the first woman to complete a "slam," as it is called, in women's doubles since Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver paired to sweep the Grand Slam events in 1984.

"Even though I lost the singles yesterday, I still was pretty pumped to come out here today," Hingis said. "I was kind of making history for myself."
